Hancock: This isn't a great movie, maybe it isn't even a good movie, but it is an entertaining fun movie. Will Smith plays Hancock the drunken superhero of LA. The humor follows with the feel of the previews; saving lives but causing millions in damages. The plot in the previews; Drunken super hero recovers to be a better person, is only half the movie. The second slightly shaky plot that takes hold in the second half is not all that well thought out but does manage to carry the movie along to the end. I felt like the story was written by a 6 th grader who wrote the first half, realized he didn't have enough words for his assignment and stayed up late the night before it was due to add on a whole second story to fill in words. The villains were very poorly done. If this movie wasn't funny, it would be horrible, but it is pretty funny so I enjoyed it.

Ok. I finally saw Once. It was good. I really like the movie. I kept hearing the songs from it on Sirius at work. And everytime a song came on my boss kept asking, "Have you seen Once yet?" Now I can finally say that I have.
I liked that it's not your typical Hollywood ending. That always makes the stories feel more 'real' I guess.
I also saw Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day. That was a good cinderella story set in pre-WWII England. Nice story, pretty funny at times, with a touch of seriousness behind it all. 2 thumbs up!

Rescue DawnIMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0462504/Trailer: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=2RgCZwJkjtwRated PG-13 (12A?) for violence and torture. I wasn't sure what to expect from this, I'm not a big war movie buff, but I needed something to watch, and it's a Christian Bale film, so thought I'd give it a go. Tis set in the Vietnam War, Christian Bale plays a Navy pilot sent to the Vietnam/Laos border in a covert operation. He's shot down, and is subsequently captured by the enemy. Torture and imprisonment in a POW camp ensues. He ain't having any of this, and plans his, and the other captives escape. To start with I wasn't overly impressed, the dialog wasn't rivetting and the story was nothing special, but with time, this film really does work. It's subdued and understated, quite a "quiet" film. There isn't excess dialog, there isn't the annoyingly piled on patriotism that you get with a lot of war films, nor is there an explosive soundtrack carrying the film. In essence it's a character piece. Every actor does a great job, and you'll find yourself caught up in the relationship between Bale's and Zahn's characters. I don't know the other actors well enough to say how much weight they lost for the film, but Christian Bale has yet again starved himself for the role, and I'd certainly say the others have gone without their puds for quite some time. I'd say in a way, this film is slightly let down by the stereotypical ending (which I can't obviously explain...), but as this is inspired by true events, maybe they couldn't change this. This is by no means a feel-good movie, and as such I always find these things difficult to rate. The acting is superb all round and the story keeps you interested. I guess this is another gritty and realistic piece, with its power derived from the subtle manner of storytelling it employs. I really don't know what I'm saying but watch it and you'll understand. This again shows how good an actor Christian Bale is. You all know I'm slightly obsessed with him but it's not because he's super-beautiful - which he can be, he certainly isn't in this film! I really think he's probably my favourite actor out there at the moment. Most actors have certain traits you expect from them, they're typecasted, or just give the same performance no matter what the role, but you don't get that with CB. Every character he plays is played differently and well, he truly becomes each character. My mum saw most of Equilibrium recently, then watched The Prestige, and was in shock that it was the same guy. It's called acting mum. Good acting.

RedIMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0972883/Trailer: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=4xqoSPIeODsRated R (18) for violence and language. WATCH THIS. *sobs* Oh, you want more information? Ok, evil bastard boys kill an old man's dog. All he wants is an admission of guilt and an apology, but they won't admit it. The dog was all he had in the world. A story of revenge ensues. Again, like with Rescue Dawn, this is what I'd call a understated, subdued film. Oh, I really don't know how to describe these films, so, taken from a review on IMDB: "a drama without a major star; the action occurs in sudden, bursts of violence; and there aren't any particularly happy characters. This isn't fun escapism, it's a serious, tense, meditative drama." The acting all round is very good, and your attention won't wander for a second. This isn't a blockbuster. I don't even know if it's going to be released in cinemas over here. But I'd watch it again, and I'd buy it on dvd.

Tropic Thunder imdbOk, this movie has been stupid. It's supposed to be about actors that can't play Vietnam soldiers good enough, so they're sent to jungle, and lots of things end messed up. They meet real soldiers from Vietnam drug cartel, while they get lost. There's not much t tell you about it, because the movie doesn't have a point actually. The story is bad, the humor is poor. It's the worst case of "let's put together loads of good and funny actors, that can't fail." The result is a horrible film. The only light point there is the character played by Robert Downey jr., and how he's masked. They made him look like a black man, and I didn't even recognize him until the end :) Final summation : don't watch this, it's a waste of time.

I forgot about Tropic Thunder. I saw it several weeks ago with some friends. Well, I'm not going to be as harsh as VV, but it certainly won't get any Oscar nominations, unless there is a catagory for one of the all time greatest cameo appearances ever. The problem is that all the best humour is based on lampooning of pretty much the whole Hollywood food chain. From actors to directors to assistant directors to--well, you get the idea. But as I said, that's the problem. Most of us in the real world already know these people live in thier own plastic hell world and we just don't give a *beep*. IMHO there are only two things worth seeing. The interaction between Downy Jr. as a white actor who had himself surgically altered to look black and a black actor (Brandon T. Jackson). Everyone raved about the job Downy Jr. did, but Jackson, who I think was having a blast with this part and the situation, did a great job as well. The other thing is the most amazing cameo appearance I have ever seen. I think VV missed it, because she would have mentioned it. And that's no slight! I would have missed it too if I hadn't been warned to watch for it and check the end credits. So I give it

ah! In movies, a cameo is a small part that would ordinarily be played by a bit part actor, played instead by a famous actor . But it can mean more than that, like Stephen King playing a bit part in his own movies.

Tom Cruise! Yep, he's been awesome :) I recognized him in the very end , when he was dancing :) I've totally forgot about him. His bits were really funny, thank you for reminding me, MK :) So cameo is e.g. when Fatboy Slim has a music video played only by kitten, in a kitten city, and there's his "missing"photo on a power pole? It's at 1:27.

Oh I watched Tropic Thunder recently, t'was quite good, and I had no clue that was Tom Cruise at all! Snow CakeI just watched Snow Cake after Lyanne talked about it here, and now I'm crying *sobs*. I know Kelsey wasn't too impressed with it, but I thought the acting was very good, and that it was quite a touching film. It had me crying and laughing, and held my attention throughout (something that's hard to do). I did have to shout OMG when two of the main folks from Slings and Arrows turned up at the wake though....

Something the Lord MadeRating: 15 IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0386792/Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6niwZF263kAnother film I bought after Lyanne and Kelsey discussed it, and oh my, tis fantastic. A truly wonderful film. I was almost crying within the first few minutes, and that was on and off for the rest of the film. I thought it was very touching to see the advances in medicine made along with the advances in tolerance and acceptance. So awful to see the way black people were treated back then. There's only really one thing I'd have changed about this film, and this is me being super-picky, and that's that it's a story spanning decades and they obviously didn't bother employing a makeup artist who knew how to do aging... I'd recommend everyone watch this, as an emotional, thought provoking, touching film.

AUSTRALIA
Here's a short plot summary from IMDb: Set in northern Australia before World War II, an English aristocrat who inherits a sprawling ranch reluctantly pacts with a stock-man in order to protect her new property from a takeover plot. As the pair drive 2,000 head of cattle over unforgiving landscape, they experience the bombing of Darwin, Australia, by Japanese forces firsthand.
Okay, that's generally what happened. How they got there was a combination of Gone With the Wind, Red River, a little magic, and just about every stereotypical device invented to tell a story on the big screen.
I've seen some really scathing reviews of Nicole Kidman, but I didn't find any fault in the job she did, or for that matter any of the performances. The problem I had was the tinker toy connecting of too many themes and sub plots in such a way that sometimes you couldn't quite get what was happening. Maybe it's an Australian thing.
I think for all it's outdoor ruggedness this is a bit more of a chick flick, but generally it was worth the trip. I would have given it higher marks if they would have tied up all the sub plots, dealt with Snidley Whiplash, and ended it about 45 minutes earlier, but I could be wrong.

Revisiting We Are MarshallI had a chance to watch this movie again after seeing it when it first came out in 2006. I will assume you know the basic plot of the movie. You can find it here. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0758794/plotsummaryMy
first reaction to this film holds true. It is absolutely the greatest
formula sports movie of all time. What truly makes the movie great
among it's peers is what it builds within the classic cliche'
framework of triumph over adversity, and victory in the end. The
"adversity" was not really adversity, but horrible death and tragedy.
The victory was not victory in the classic sense and the movie is very
honest about that, even though the framework is built around "the big
game". There were strong performances all around with major
kudos going to Anthony Mackie as Nate Ruffin, and Mathew Fox as Red
Dawson. Matthew McConaughey's interpretation of the borderline
eccentric Coach Lengyel may be one of the most misunderstood performances of all time. You'll have to see it to
understand. My favorite scene in the movie, and I have a lot
of them, was the night before the big game, when Coach Lengyel explains
in a nutshell, why he was there and why it was important to carry on
the football program. Stirring stuff. For what it is, and how much I enjoyed it I give it

CORALINE
ok, so I already loved the book.
And I gotta say that for a translation from book to movie, always very tricky, turned out great this time! And as a 3D movie, it was the best 3D effect I've ever seen (not counting IMAX...cause that's not fair)
The fact that this movie was stop-motion animation, the attention to detail was outstanding. There were funny parts, 'scary' parts, and all around the movie was very entertaining.
Summary:
Coraline moves into an creepy old house with her parents. Her parents ignore her and are always too busy. So she has to go find her own fun. She meets the grandson of the landlady, and the very eccentric tennants. Soon, Coraline discovers a secret world, hidden in the walls of the house and in that world her Other parents have time for her, and the house is full of wonderful fun things, and she feels like she is special. But her Other Mother has plans for her, and Coraline must fight for her life!

WATCHMEN--I wish I hadn't.
I have a new appreciation of those people who found Lord of the Rings
tedious and long. Those of us who grew up reading Tolkien's
marvelously intricate alternate mythology of Britain (in case you
didn't know what it was) for the most part had no idea what they were
talking about. What slow parts? Okay if you're going to journey to the
mines of Moria or the white city, of course you have to WALK a lot!
Anyway, I've never read a graphic novel or graphic comic book or
whatever they are, so I had to watch this movie without knowing it is
apparently an adaption from one of the greatest of those ever.
Fine. As a movie, it sucked. I read Roger Ebert's review before I went, and
he said it was an "experience". Well, it was that. So is time spent
in the waiting room before a dentist appointment.
Boring characters. Blue man the most boringestest.
Good special effects (which are now standard like seat belts).
Gratuitous violence (ditto-standard)
Absolutely horrendous editing. A great example (If you must go see it) was the random scene where some people are rescued from a fire. There are so many things wrong with this scene to start with, but it is cut and pasted together so badly, you'll be thinking "WTF? How did they get there? What just happened? How did they get from there to there? Did I say WTF?"
Plot that just lays there and if unpredictable at all, only because you just don't really care.
The good thing. Three words-- Jackie Earle Hailey. And they blew him up. I don't care if that's a spoiler. I just really don't care.
Okay one more good thing. Coming attractions of the new Star Trek movie. This could be good.
mk out.
Oh, edited this to say no Pervys. Not one. Nada. Yes, this movie really pissed me off!

Star Trek (2009) Ok, first off- let me say that I went in to the movie hating it. I DIDN'T want to like it on principle. I know that the original cast cannot make another movie. Heck, even TNG can't make another one... but I didn't want to see my beloved characters chewed up and spit out. But, I was suprised. I ended up liking it. No one was more shocked than me. As a way to introduce the world of Star Trek to a whole new generation- it works. As a way to quench the thirst of those who've been longing for another Trek movie- it works. But when you watch it, keep in mind that this is all new. Everything that you once though of as the Star Trek universe, it NOT a part of this movie. Yeah, they do take bits and pieces from various movies, episodes and even books. But this has absolutely nothing to do with anything that has come before. If you keep that in mind- and don't mind that one little snag- then you will prolly like this movie too.
Story- pretty weak, but a good introduction Acting- really good Directing- eh, I've seen a lot worse Special effects- great
Overall rating:

Star Trek (2009) I got tied up with various stuff or I would have put this up much sooner. I went to the Midnight Special last Thursday. First off I'll say I agree with Renee' on the But I don't hold anything in the history of the Star Trek universe as sacred, so I was anticipating something good. I wasn't disappointed. Besides, they almost, sort of, gave us an excuse for the differences. It was the most fun I've had watching a movie in a long time. I loved the little things they put in along the way for those who know. Pike in the wheelchair was a nice foreshadowing touch. Using Renee's outline: Story: yeah, and not much of a villain either. But meeting the old/new characters as it went along more than made up for it. Acting: Only maybe a problem with Scotty's accent, but otherwise good. Directing: I think it was fine. One of the things I think was outstanding was the pacing. With the weak story line, timing of the character introductions for example, was done to the best advantage. Humor was also well done. Special Effects: Well, these days good special effects are like color. You just expect it. If I have any criticism, it would be the cameo appearance. If you're going to start a new Star Trek universe, start a new universe. But that is just IMHO.
