RE:Movie, movies, and yet more movies!
(Date Posted:05/26/2008 3:09:54 PM)
I watch a lot of movies, both old and new, I usually decide what to watch on the basis of what's new at the video store, or I go by actors I like and then just watch a bunch of movies with them in it. Recommendations from others are always welcome, but I go for horror and thrillers a lot, but my friends are more into (romantic) comedy so I'm happy with this topic. Hopefully you guys can recommend things that are more up my alley. Please if you are going to discuss movies and you use spoilers, please put a warning sign up, so others who haven't seen the movie yet know to stop reading. Oh I would try to write what the movies are about, but I find I'm lazy so I'll just refer you to the imdb page for each movie. The mist: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0884328/I enjoyed it very much, a definate must see if you're into horror/thriller/monster movies The last mimzy: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0768212/I thought it would suck, but it turned out to be a really sweet story. V for Vendetta: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0434409/Best movie that's been done these last few years! Cloverfield: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1060277/Like it, from the description I thought it was going to be a bit blair witch project (which I didn't much care for), but it was nicely done. Awake: Don't watch it, waste of time. I thought it was going to be about this guy being awake during surgery and he is, but then it's a whole nother story. Maybe a great plot-twist to some, but I didn't think it was a very original story.

I wasn't too impressed with the Blair Witch, but probably because it had so much press I knew what to expect, I don't know. V for Vendetta is definitely one of the best films recently, I totally agree. I LOVED that movie and went to see it at least twice at the cinema and bought it on dvd as soon as it came out. My favourite movies are hard to say but include V for Vendetta, Leon, Grosse Point Blank and Gladiator, all of which get 5 pervys: I am much more into thrillers than chick flicks, but do enjoy them too. I think the most recent film I saw in the cinema was 27 Dresses (which you know cos I've told you) and that was lovely. The most recent dvd I've watched was Grosse Point Blank for the hundredth time. Excellent. If you haven't seen it, go watch! Before that t'was the Mist which again you know my feelings on cos I was talking to you whilst watching it!

The movie I saw, BTW, was Indiana Jones, and I really enjoyed it and felt like it was all the fun of the first three movies in the same silly and unbeleivable style.

Ok, I just finished watching The Stand, so I thought I'd write a little something. I've seen it a bunch of times before, but it is good, and was bargainous so couldn't refuse the dvd. Tis based on the book by Stephen King, and the screenplay is written by him so I guess it's probably close to the book if you've read that. It's hard to describe. A good v. evil type story, god v. devil I suppose. It starts with a man-made supervirus that kills most of the population. The survivors all have dreams about a nice little old lady, and a not-so-nice man, and based on their dreams and who they are they form two camps. The goodies with the old lady on God's side, in Colorado, and the baddies with the horrible devil man, in Las Vegas. I guess it's a story about survival, friendship, betrayal, good, evil, religion, I don't know what. I really enjoy it, and despite it being more than 10 years old now, with some dodgy effects and perhaps more God-loving than I'd normally like, I still found it very enjoyable. Perhaps it's that it gets you thinking, what would I do if most people died? What would happen to the survivors? Anyway, I'd recommend it.

Perfume: the story of a murderer: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0396171/Ok, this is such a strange movie. It's all about smell. Which you'd think is hard to capture on film, but they do it so beautifully using colors and music, really drawing you into the scenes. You can seriously almost smell what you see. The main carachter is somewhat disturbed though (which is to be understood given his background), so he murders for smell. It's Europian cinema though, so there is sex, thought I'd warn you... If you like that one you might also enjoy Quills: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0180073/a story about the marquis de sade. And if you're really on a role with the british costume drama's then you can try to get your hands on Casanova: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0427042/ the English 2005 mini series for TV, not the American movie.

Perfume is more than strange. Somewhat disturbed? Try boils people to make perfume. That's more than disturbed! But there is a lot of sex, massive orgies and whatnot.

To be fair, he does do that, but he grew up in a really harsh environment. He never knew any better, he doesn't know what love is, because he never knew it. There's really only the one massive orgy :P

I've seen the last Indiana Jones a while ago. I'm not a big fan, but I really enjoyed this one. Cate Blaqnchet as a russian doctor has been very funny :)
Yesterday i've been watching Penelope, with Christina Ricci. T'was a nice story, made me feel good.

Okay, I cut out early Friday and went to see Indiana Jones. First let me say I was never a big fan of these movies. Not because they weren't good, but they just didn't move me. This one did pretty much as well as they all did. But it underscores my idea that "Hollywood" which has come to mean all the big daddy studios in the US, desperatley needs real competition. This movie is a prime example. Because they give us Harrison Ford and some special effects they seem to think they can get away with standard formula predictable schlock plots. The ugly truth is they're right. The movie is making tens of millions. Hey, they got my money too :) I tried. I really did. Yes, when watching action/adventure flicks like this one I know you're supposed to suspend your disbelief but they didn't give me a chance. Just about the time I was into my fourth handful of popcorn, they have the main character giving a solilique about how horrible it is that the country has gone all paranoid over the comunist menace. Then they proceed to show us soviet agents running all over the place through college campuses and taking over secret military bases by armed assault. Puleeeeese! I realize that Spielberg has to get in his shots of revisionist history, but he usually does it with discreet artistry. Suspend disbelief yes. Check my brain at the door, I'm sorry. But as always, this is IMHO.

I thought IJ was a fun movie. It is what it is, a rolercoaster ride in my oppinion. It's not meant to be deep or complex. You know what it's going to be before ya walk in the door. Rollercoaster rides take no brains. They're just fun.
My only complaints really are that it was a bit over done in some places, (sword fight thru the jungle) and the the whole hiding in the refrigerator while the bomb went off was just pointless and cheesy. Why include that at all?
Other than that....it was a fun brainless waist of an afternoon. I was good!

I just watched Hard Candy, a film with essentially just 2 actors. Amazing acting, incredibly provocative, worthy of awards in my opinion, but wouldn't be considered for awards because of its subject. This is about paedophilia, an older guy grooms a 14 year old girl online and they meet up, and I can't say much more than that without giving away the plot. One of the blurbs on the dvd cover is "A powerful thought-provoking thriller..makes you think, even as it's keeping you on the edge of your seat", and that's a pretty good description. In my opinion well worth watching. It is an 18 (R) certificate so perhaps not for our younger members. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0424136/Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYBnm1xhM7I

Oy NN, don't you watch perfume, you're too young for all the orgy and killing. Ehrm for people planning on watching The Stand. It's very good. But you should be warned that it's six frigin hours long. And you think, oh I'll just watch the first part or half of it, but once you get into it you don't want to stop and before you know it, it's 5 in the morning.

Hehe! Sorry, I should have mentioned that the Stand is quite long! And once you start watching, you do find yourself wanting to watch all of it. T'was done as a miniseries on tele, and on the dvds comes in 4 "chapters", so you can stop it.... if you have the willpower.
And yeah, it sounds like Perfume is only for 18+. Hard Candy is, but it might actually be worthwhile watching younger - tis about the dangers of t'interweb for youngsters in a way. There's no sex, or graphic nudity or anything, but it is violent, not blood everywhere violent, but violent. Hmm, I'm good at this descriptive thing. Let's say it's a psychological thriller, and if you're thinking about watching it, be prepared for it to mess with your mind.
